Mamoosh Sustainability Manifesto

Our Vision

At Mamoosh, sustainability is about more than protecting the environment; we believe in creating lasting value for our people, our community and the future of our business.

As a family-run artisan bakery, we believe success should be measured not only by the products we make, but also by the positive impact we have on our employees, customers, suppliers, our local community and the environment.

Our ambition is to prove that a growing artisan food business can create skilled local jobs, preserve traditional baking methods and benefit the community while operating responsibly for future generations.

Social Responsibility

Investing in our People

People are at the heart of Mamoosh.

  • We create skilled local employment as our business continues to grow.
  • We pay above the National Minimum Wage.
  • We invest in training, cross-department development and career progression.
  • We provide a workplace which is safe, inclusive and supportive.
  • We encourage employees to build long-term careers within the business.

Developing Future Talent

We are committed to supporting the next generation by offering work experience placements to students and young people. Many of our placements have resulted in permanent employment, providing young people with their first step into the workplace and the opportunity to develop rewarding, long-term careers within Mamoosh. By encouraging potential talent, we not only support our local economy but also preserve artisan baking and food production skills for future generations.

Supporting our Community

Giving back to our community is part of who we are.

We proudly:

  • Donate pitta bread to our local food banks.
  • Support local charities.
  • Sponsor local sports clubs and community projects of benefit to young and older alike.
  • Continue investing in Newhaven, creating jobs and helping strengthen the local economy.
  • Continue to build relationships with schools, colleges and educational institutions to supply healthy eating options for future generations.

Environmental Responsibility

Reducing Food Waste

Across both our bakery & café, we:

  • Carefully plan production to minimise waste.
  • Continuously review our processes to improve efficiency.

Energy & Resources

We are committed to lowering our environmental impact by:

  • Benefiting from solar-generated electricity.
  • Investing in more energy-efficient equipment.
  • Looking for opportunities to reduce energy and water consumption.
  • Reusing resources wherever practical.
  • Improving efficiency within our production facilities.

Packaging

We are committed to:

  • Decreasing unnecessary packaging.
  • Increasing the use of recyclable and sustainable packaging materials.
  • Working with suppliers to identify environmentally responsible alternatives.

Governance & Responsible Business

Good governance is fundamental to preserving trust with our customers, suppliers & employees.

Our commitments include:

  • Maintaining our SALSA Food Safety accreditation.
  • Full product traceability.
  • High food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Ethical business practices.
  • Long-term supplier relationships based on fairness and honesty.
  • Continuous improvement through routine reviews and investment.

Our Onward Journey

In 2027, we will begin our ESG accreditation journey by working towards compliance with the ORB UK ESG Standards and publishing our first Sustainability Manifesto, setting measurable environmental, social and governance objectives.

Sustainability is a process of ongoing improvement, and we are always looking for ways of reducing our impact on the environment while improving our social impact. We are continuously working towards:

  • Moving to a fully electric vehicle fleet where operationally practical.
  • Reducing packaging and increasing the use of recyclable and environmentally sustainable alternatives.
  • Further reducing food waste throughout our operations.
  • Improving energy efficiency and increasing our use of renewable energy.
  • Investing in our people and the wider community through training, apprenticeships, work experience and employment opportunities.
  • Encouraging the long-term regeneration of our community through our continued support of local charities, food banks, sports clubs and community groups.
  • Monitoring and lowering our environmental footprint across all areas of the business.
  • Building strong, ethical relationships with our suppliers and business partners.
  • Preserving traditional artisan baking methods whilst adopting innovations to improve quality, productivity and sustainability.

Measuring our Impact

We believe sustainability should be measurable and invest in monitoring and improving:

  • Staff training and development.
  • The creation of local jobs.
  • Work experience placements.
  • Community donations and partnerships.
  • Food waste reduction.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Packaging reduction.
  • Carbon emissions.
  • Renewable energy use.

Looking Forward

We believe sustainability is an ongoing obligation.

As Mamoosh continues to grow nationally, we are committed to protecting our artisan values and investing in people to ensure our success benefits the communities we serve for future generations.
