Dip into National Picnic Week with some pitta favourites
National Picnic Week 2024 will be celebrated between June 17th and 23rd. The time generally heralds the warmer weather in the UK and the longer summer evenings. We like to get together with family and friends and celebrate summer and our love for the great outdoors and eating in the open air.
While picnicking is frequently seen as a quintessentially British pastime, its origins can be traced back to early 17th-century France. Across Europe and the Middle East, though, the picnic is almost an everyday occurrence as everyone loves eating outdoors.
Sharing food with friends outdoors is the perfect summer picnic. Whether arranged on the beach, in a park, on the South Downs, or even in your own garden, it is a fabulous excuse to enjoy good food and a few drinks.
Natural Pitta Breads make an attractive addition to a mezze
A mezze board is just one way to enjoy a range of small savoury dishes with crisp vegetable batons, crispy pitta chips, pitta bread or French bread. You can either stuff the pitta bread or French stick before you go (ideal for a theme park picnic) or pack them whole and cut them up on the picnic. Laid out with hummus, baba ganoush, labneh, tzatziki or a tahini dip, these are simple ideas for picnics. Combine with some cold chicken, falafel, hard-boiled egg, vegan rolls or smoked salmon and your picnic mezze is starting to sound delicious and wholesome.
Ideas for Pitta fillings and sandwiches
Here are 8 delicious ideas for fillings for pitta bread sandwiches that are perfect for summer picnics:
- Hummus and roasted vegetables: Spread a generous amount of hummus inside the pitta bread and fill it with roasted vegetables like eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, and onions.
- Falafel and green tahini: Stuff the pitta bread with crispy falafel balls and top it with green tahini or tahini dip with harissa and salad.
- Grilled chicken and avocado: Marinate chicken in your favourite spices and grill until cooked through. Slice the chicken and add it to the pitta bread with sliced avocado, schoug, tomato and a drizzle of olive oil.

- BLT: Cook crispy bacon and layer it with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise inside the pitta bread.
- Egg salad: Mix hard-boiled eggs with mayonnaise, mustard, and chopped chives. Fill the pitta bread with the egg salad and some greens like arugula or spinach.
- Roast beef sliced thinly smeared with Dijon mustard with slices of red onion, gherkins or a fresh salad.
- Smoked salmon and cream cheese: Spread cream cheese inside the pitta bread and top it with smoked salmon and sliced cucumber. Add some dill for extra flavour.
These filling ideas are sure to impress your picnic guests and provide a tasty and satisfying meal.
